Lesson 186 · 3 min
Building your own small AI tool
The easiest first AI tool is a saved prompt for one job you do often, then you can grow it into a project, a skill or a small app.

Your first AI tool does not need code. Pick one task you repeat every week, like turning meeting notes into action items or writing product captions. Write the best prompt you can, test it on three real examples, and save it.
Level two: put that prompt into a project or custom assistant with any reference files, so you can start a new chat and just paste the input. Share it with a colleague and watch how they use it.
Level three: ask an AI to build it as a small web page or artifact with a box for input and a button. Now anyone can use it without seeing the prompt. Some tools can connect to a model through an API for this, which brings in keys and costs.
At every level, the same habits apply. Keep the job narrow, test with real examples, write down what it should not do, and ask users what went wrong. A small tool that does one thing well beats a big one that does ten things badly.
Do it now
Build level one today
- 1. Choose one weekly task you would happily hand to a helper.
- 2. Write a prompt for it with the template below and test it on three past examples.
- 3. Fix what went wrong, then save the final prompt somewhere you will find it.
You help me with [TASK]. Input: [WHAT I WILL PASTE]. Output: [EXACT FORMAT]. Rules: [3 RULES]. Never: [1 THING TO AVOID]. If the input is unclear, ask me one question before answering.

Words from this lesson
- Prompt
- The instruction or question you give an AI. Clearer prompts with context usually get much better answers.
- Prompt engineering
- The practice of wording, structuring and testing prompts to get reliable, useful results from AI.
- API
- A doorway that lets one program send requests to another, for example an app asking an AI model for an answer.
- Vibe coding
- Building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting its code, often without reading it closely.
