Lesson 91 · 3 min

Practise for an oral exam or interview

Voice mode lets AI play your examiner or interviewer, so you can rehearse speaking answers out loud before the real day.

Speaking an answer is a different skill from writing one. You need to find words quickly, keep calm, and stay on topic. The only way to get better is to practise out loud.

Many chatbot apps have a voice mode: you talk, it listens and talks back. Ask it to act as the examiner for your speaking test, thesis defence or job interview, asking one question at a time and following up on what you say.

Ask for honest feedback after each answer: was it clear, too long, did it answer the question? You can also ask for a tough examiner who interrupts, so the real one feels easy.

Treat its feedback as notes from a practice partner. Real examiners have their own criteria, so check the official marking guide for your test as well.

Do it now

A five question mock

  1. 1. Open a chatbot that has voice mode, or type if it does not.
  2. 2. Paste the prompt below and start the mock exam.
  3. 3. After five questions, ask for your top two things to improve.
Act as an examiner for [EXAM OR INTERVIEW, e.g. an English speaking test at B1 level / a job interview for a junior accountant].
Ask me one question at a time and wait. Ask one follow-up based on my answer.
After 5 questions, give me feedback on clarity, length and whether I answered the question, with my 2 biggest things to improve.

Quick check
