Lesson 173 · 2 min

Practising safely with AI simulations

AI can play the other side of a hard situation, like an angry customer or a job interviewer, so you can practise where mistakes cost nothing.

Many skills are learned by doing, and doing them for real is risky. Your first salary talk, your first complaint call, your first time saying no to a client: you only get one try at the real thing.

A simulation gives you a safe rehearsal. You describe the scene and the character, and the AI stays in role while you practise. You can pause, restart, try a softer or firmer approach, and ask for feedback.

It works because you can repeat it. Run the same scene three times and you will notice your own habits, such as apologising too much or forgetting the main point. Ask the AI to grade you against two or three skills you choose.

A simulation is a rehearsal, so real people will surprise you more. Use it to build confidence and phrasing, then practise with a colleague or friend for the human side. Keep real names and real customer details out of the setup.

Do it now

Rehearse a hard conversation

  1. 1. Pick a conversation you are dreading or want to do better.
  2. 2. Paste the prompt below and fill in the details.
  3. 3. Run it twice, trying a different approach the second time, then ask for feedback.
Let's run a practice simulation. You play [CHARACTER, e.g. an upset customer whose order is late]. I play [MY ROLE]. Stay in character, reply in two or three sentences, and react realistically to what I say. When I type STOP, step out of the role and give me three pieces of feedback.

Words from this lesson

Role prompting
Starting a prompt by telling the AI who to act as, such as an experienced editor, to shape tone and focus.
Prompt
The instruction or question you give an AI. Clearer prompts with context usually get much better answers.
