Talking with AI out loud

Voice mode lets you have a spoken conversation with a chatbot, and knowing how it works helps you get better answers.

Many chatbots now have a voice mode. You speak, it answers aloud, and you can cut in when it goes off track.

Behind the scenes there are three jobs: hear your words, think of a reply, and speak it. Some tools run these as separate steps. Newer ones handle sound more directly, so they react faster and can pick up tone of voice.

Speed is the hard part. A pause of even a second feels awkward in conversation, so voice modes give shorter, chattier answers than typed chats. For detail, ask it to send the full version as text.

Your voice is personal data. Check whether recordings are saved, and avoid saying passwords, ID numbers or other people's private details out loud to any assistant.

Do it now

Practise a conversation

  1. 1. Open the voice mode in a chatbot app you already use.
  2. 2. Say the prompt below and hold a two-minute practice conversation.
  3. 3. At the end, ask it to write down three phrases you could use next time.
Let's practise a short job interview in English. You are the interviewer. Ask me one question at a time, wait for my answer, and give me one quick tip after each answer.
