Claude Code, explained for non-programmers

Claude Code is an AI helper that works inside a folder on your computer, reading and changing files and running commands when you allow it.

A chatbot can only see what you paste into it. With Claude Code, you point it at a folder, and it can open the files there, create new ones, edit them and run programs, asking for permission along the way.

It was made for software work, so developers use it to build features and fix bugs. But a folder can hold anything. People also use it to rename a hundred photos, turn a pile of notes into a tidy website, or merge spreadsheets into one report.

You talk to it in plain language and it shows each step: which file it wants to change and what the change is. You can say yes, no, or try another way. That review step is your safety net, so read it.

Start in a test folder with copies of your files, never your only copy. Keep a backup, ask it to explain what it plans before it acts, and do not let it handle passwords or private keys.

Do it now

Ask for a plan, not an action

  1. 1. Think of a messy folder on your computer, like downloads or photos.
  2. 2. In any chatbot, describe it and use the prompt below.
  3. 3. Read the plan and judge whether you would let a tool do it. That habit is the main skill for using Claude Code.
I have a folder with [DESCRIBE THE FILES]. I want [THE RESULT]. Write a step-by-step plan a file-editing AI tool could follow. List any step that could delete or overwrite files, and how to make it safe.
