Lesson 198 · 2 min

Giving feedback to a colleague

Use AI to turn a frustrated rant into specific, kind feedback about behaviour and its effect, then say it in your own voice.

When something a colleague does bothers you, the first draft in your head is usually unfair. AI is a good private space to get that draft out and calm it down.

Good feedback names a specific moment, the behaviour, the effect it had, and what you would like next time. "In Tuesday's meeting the report came an hour late, so I could not check the numbers. Could you send it the day before?" is clear and fair.

Ask the AI to rewrite your notes in that shape and to point out anything that sounds like an attack on the person. Then put it into words you would really say.

Feedback lands best face to face or on a call. Use the AI draft as preparation, and leave out the colleague's name and private details when you type.

Do it now

Calm down a draft

  1. 1. Write what is bothering you, honestly, without names.
  2. 2. Run the prompt below.
  3. 3. Read the result out loud and change anything that does not sound like you.
Help me give feedback to a colleague. Here is what happened, in my unfiltered words: [PASTE]. Rewrite it as: the specific situation, the behaviour, its effect on me or the work, and a clear request for next time. Keep it short and kind. Then point out any phrases in my original that blame the person instead of the behaviour.

Prompt
The instruction or question you give an AI. Clearer prompts with context usually get much better answers.
Role prompting
Starting a prompt by telling the AI who to act as, such as an experienced editor, to shape tone and focus.
