Lab results: use AI to prepare questions

AI can explain the words on a blood test sheet so you arrive at the doctor with better questions, and that is all it should do.

A lab result sheet is full of short codes, numbers and reference ranges. Seeing a value marked high or low can be scary, especially at night when the clinic is closed. A chatbot can explain what each test usually measures in plain words.

Its limits matter more than usual here. One number out of range often means little on its own. Your doctor reads it together with your age, history, medicines and other tests. A chatbot sees none of that and can still guess wrongly in a calm, confident voice.

So use AI to learn the vocabulary and write a list of questions. Never use it to diagnose yourself, and never start, stop or change a medicine because of what it said.

Before you upload a photo of the sheet, cover or crop your name, date of birth, ID number, patient code and the clinic's barcode. Health details are among the most private data you have.

Do it now

Turn a result sheet into questions

  1. 1. Copy only the test names, values and reference ranges, with no personal details.
  2. 2. Ask a chatbot to explain each test in plain words, using the prompt below.
  3. 3. Write down the questions it suggests, and add your own.
  4. 4. Bring the list to your doctor and let them explain what your results mean for you.
Here are some lab test names with values and reference ranges: [paste, no personal details]. In plain words, explain what each test usually measures. Do not tell me what I have. Then give me five questions to ask my doctor.
