Lesson 101 · 2 min

Stay focused when AI makes it easy

When AI can do the hard part in seconds, the real skill is choosing which hard parts to keep doing yourself.

AI removes friction. That is great for chores and risky for learning, because some of the struggle is where learning happens. Working through a hard paragraph or a tricky sum is how the skill gets built.

Before you open a chatbot, decide what the task is for. If the point is the result, like a tidy email, let AI help a lot. If the point is your skill, like learning to write or calculate, try it yourself first for a set time, say ten minutes.

Watch for the easy loop: ask, skim, ask again, feel busy, learn little. If you have read three AI answers and cannot say what you learned, close the chat and write one sentence from memory.

Keep some AI-free practice in your week. Read a chapter without a summary. Write a first draft by hand. You will notice where your own thinking is strong and where you lean on the tool.

Do it now

The ten minute rule

  1. 1. Next time you want to ask AI for help with something you are learning, set a ten minute timer first.
  2. 2. Work on it alone until the timer ends.
  3. 3. Then use the prompt below, showing what you tried.
I tried this myself for 10 minutes: [PASTE YOUR ATTEMPT].
I am stuck on: [WHERE].
Do not solve it for me. Tell me if I am on the right track and give me one hint for the next step.

Automation bias
Our habit of trusting a machine's answer too readily, even when our own judgement or other evidence says otherwise.
