  2. 2 Large-print cheat sheet for grandparents
  3. 3 Catch the AI mistake
  4. 4 Family password card

In the print dialog choose A4, scale 100% (or Default) and turn on Background graphics for the coloured parts. Choose Save as PDF to keep a file.

Kit

The password card is the one I would print first. It takes five minutes and helps against the scariest scams.

Our family AI rules

AI apps can help with homework, ideas and questions. These are the rules we agreed on together. Put them on the fridge and read them again when something new comes up.

  1. 1Ask a grown-up before you try a new AI app. Some apps are not made for children, and some collect a lot about you.
  2. 2Never type passwords, codes, ID numbers or our home address. What you type can be stored and seen by other people.
  3. 3AI can be wrong. Check anything important. It can sound sure of itself and still make things up.
  4. 4Use AI to learn and to explain things. Do your own homework.Your brain only gets stronger when it does the work.
  5. 5If something feels weird or scary, stop and tell an adult. You will never be in trouble for telling us.
  6. 6Screens go off at the times we agreed.Sleep, meals and time together come first.
  7. 7Be kind. No fake photos or voices of real people.Fakes can hurt someone, even when they are meant as a joke.
  8. 8Grown-ups follow these rules too.Rules are fairer, and easier to keep, when everyone keeps them.

AI helper: a short guide

A chatbot is a computer program you can talk or type to. It answers in everyday words. Here is how to use it safely.

AI is good for

  • Explain a medicine leaflet Try saying: “Explain this leaflet in simple words." Always check with the doctor or pharmacist.”
  • Write to a grandchild Try saying: “Help me write a short, warm birthday message to my grandson.”
  • Find a recipe idea Try saying: “I have eggs, tomatoes and rice. What can I cook?”
  • Explain a confusing letter Try saying: “What does this letter mean? Do I need to do anything?”

Be careful

  • It can be wrong, even when it sounds sure.
  • It is not a doctor.
  • Never give it codes, passwords or bank details.
  • A call or video from family asking for money may be fake.

If something feels wrong

  1. Hang up. Do not send money.
  2. Call the family member back on the number you know.
  3. Call the bank's hotline printed on your card.
  4. If you are in danger, call the police: 113.

Catch the AI mistake

A game for a grown-up and a child (about 8 to 12) to play together with any chatbot. Chatbots are clever, but they often slip up. Your job is to catch them.

How to play

  1. Sit together and open a chatbot on the grown-up's phone or computer.
  2. Ask each question below, word for word. The child reads the answer out loud.
  3. Decide together: right or wrong? Then check it a different way: count, look it up, or ask someone who knows.
  4. Fill in the table. Score one point for every mistake you catch.

Five questions to try

QuestionWhat AI saidRight or wrong? How we checked
1. How many times does the letter e appear in the word "independence"?Look for: Chatbots often miscount letters. Write the word out and count yourselves (the answer is 4).
2. Who was the first person to walk on Mars?Look for: Nobody has walked on Mars yet. See if it spots the trick or makes up a name.
3. Tell me about the shops on our street. (Say your real street and town.)Look for: For a very small place it may invent shops or details. You know the real answer.
4. What happened in the news today?Look for: It may not know about today, or may give old news as if it were new. Check the dates.
5. A train leaves at 9:45. The trip takes 2 hours 30 minutes, and the train is 20 minutes late. When does it arrive?Look for: Word problems with several steps may go wrong. Work it out on paper (the answer is 12:35).

Talk about it

  • Which mistake surprised you most?
  • Did the chatbot sound sure even when it was wrong?
  • What could you check when AI helps with homework?
  • When would you trust it, and when would you ask a person?

4. Family password card

Our family password

Scammers can now copy a voice from a short clip, or fake a video call. Choose a secret family word, or a question only your family can answer. If someone calls or messages saying they are family and asks for money or urgent help, ask for the word. If they cannot give it, do not send money.

Our rules

  • Never share an OTP code or a password with anyone, even family.
  • Banks and police never ask you to move money to a "safe account".
  • Hang up and call back on a number you already know.
  • Take your time. Scammers try to rush you.
  • Never post the family word anywhere, online or off.

If a call or message asks for money or codes

  1. Say: "What is our family word?"
  2. If they cannot say it, or they make excuses, hang up.
  3. Call the person back on the number on this card.
  4. Tell another family member what happened.
  5. If money has already gone, call your bank's hotline at once, then the police on 113.
