A friend says there is no point training their goldfish or giving it a bigger tank, because "goldfish forget everything after three seconds". What is the most accurate reply?

01The file in one minute

  1. 1The myth

Goldfish forget everything after about three seconds.

  2. 2The evidence

Goldfish have learned to press a lever at a set hour and to link sounds or colours with food.

  3. 3How long

Studies report fish remembering trained tasks for weeks or months, though it varies by task.

  4. 4The lesson for AI

02Timeline

  1. 1960s onward

Scientists study learning and memory in goldfish and other fish.

  2. Various studies

Goldfish learn to press a lever for food at a set hour each day.

  3. 2015

Culum Brown's review describes fish as capable learners with long-term memory.

03The myth

The three-second goldfish is a popular joke, and it is often used to excuse small bowls: if the fish forgets each lap, why give it more space? Nobody seems to know where the number came from, and no study ever found it.

Fish learning has been studied for decades. Goldfish have been trained to press a lever for food, and when the lever worked only at a certain hour each day, they learned to press it at that time. Other studies have trained fish to link a sound or colour with food, or to find their way through a simple maze, and found they still responded weeks or months later.

In a 2015 review of fish intelligence, the biologist Culum Brown of Macquarie University in Australia described many such findings. He concluded that fish have long-term memories and learning skills that often match those of other animals.

04What the evidence says

Memory helps any animal survive: remembering where food is, which places are dangerous and who is a rival. It would be strange for a fish to have none.

How long a fish remembers depends on the task and the species, and studies vary, so a single exact number is hard to give. What is clear is that three seconds is far too short.

The AI angle: people also guess wrongly about what AI tools remember. Some chatbots forget earlier parts of a long chat, and others save details about you between chats. Check how the tool you use handles memory before you share personal information.

05How to spot the next one

  1. Ask who measured a claim about animals, and how.
  2. Be wary when a myth is used to excuse something convenient, such as a tiny fish bowl.
  3. Treat memory as a skill that varies by task and animal, not a fixed number.
  4. Read your AI tool's settings to see what it remembers between chats, and turn memory off for sensitive work.
