Teachers: make a rubric with AI

A rubric spells out what good work looks like, and AI can draft one in minutes from your assignment and goals.

A rubric is a table: criteria down the side, levels across the top, and a short description in each box. It makes marking fairer and tells students what you expect before they start.

Give the AI the assignment, the age group and what you care about most. Ask for 3 to 5 criteria and 3 or 4 levels, with descriptions that name what you would see in the work, like "uses at least two sources" instead of "good research".

Ask for a student-friendly version too, in simple "I can" sentences. Students can use it to check their own work before handing it in.

Test it on one or two real pieces of work. If two teachers would mark the same work differently with it, sharpen the wording until you agree.

Do it now

Draft a rubric for your next task

  1. 1. Choose an assignment you will set soon.
  2. 2. Use the prompt below.
  3. 3. Try it on one past piece of work and fix any box that felt vague.
Create a rubric for this assignment: [DESCRIBE IT], grade [GRADE].
What matters most: [GOALS].
Use 4 criteria and 4 levels (beginning, developing, secure, excellent) in a table. Each box should describe what I would see in the work.
Then write a student version as "I can" statements.
