What is AI, really?

AI is software that learned patterns from examples instead of following rules a person wrote.

Normal software follows instructions. A programmer writes: if the total is over 100, add free delivery. The computer does exactly that, nothing more.

AI works differently. Instead of rules, it is shown millions of examples, and it finds the patterns by itself. Show it enough photos of cats and it learns what a cat looks like, without anyone describing whiskers.

Today, when people say AI they usually mean chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. These were trained on huge amounts of text, so they learned the patterns of language. That is why they can write, explain and translate.

AI is not a person and not magic. It is a very good pattern-matcher. Knowing that one fact will help you use it well and spot when it goes wrong.

Do it now

Ask a chatbot to explain itself

  1. 1.Open any free chatbot: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.
  2. 2.Paste the prompt below.
  3. 3.Notice which parts of its answer match what you just read.
Explain in 5 short sentences how you work, for someone who has never used AI. Then give me one thing you are good at and one thing you often get wrong.

Words from this lesson

AI
Computer software that learns patterns from examples so it can recognise, predict or produce things, instead of following only hand-written rules.
Machine learning
Teaching computers by showing them many examples so they find the patterns themselves, instead of being given every rule.
Chatbot
A program you talk to in everyday language by typing or speaking, which replies in the same way.
Training data
The examples, such as text, images or recordings, that a model learns its patterns from.
