Certifications and a free-tier project
Choose a sensible first certification and build one small project with cost guardrails.
Pick one provider to start
The concepts transfer, so start with one provider and go deep. Choose the one used by employers in your area, or by the company you want to join. Job adverts are the best guide. AWS has the largest share of the market, with Azure and Google Cloud also widely used; many companies use more than one.
Certification paths
Each provider has an entry-level exam that tests concepts: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, and Google Cloud Digital Leader. The next level is hands-on associate exams, such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Azure Administrator Associate, and Google Associate Cloud Engineer. CompTIA Cloud+ is a vendor-neutral option.
Certificates help you get past filters, but employers hire for what you can show. Use the free official training from each provider, and pair every exam with a real project.
A starter project
Build a small static website or a simple API with one serverless function and one storage bucket. Describe it with infrastructure as code if you can. Add a custom domain only if you want to; domains cost money.
Write a README with a diagram, the services used and why, the IAM permissions you granted, your monthly cost estimate, and how to delete everything.
Guardrails before you click create
Turn on MFA. Set budget alerts at small amounts. Use the smallest sizes and one region. Tag every resource with the project name. When you are done for the day, delete or stop what you do not need, and check the billing page the next morning.
Try it
Plan your project and your exam
- 1.Search job adverts in your city for cloud roles and count which provider appears most.
- 2.Open that provider's free official training and find its entry-level exam guide.
- 3.Ask a chatbot the prompt below.
- 4.Set your budget alert before you create the first resource.
I am preparing for [exam name] and want one hands-on project that stays within the free tier of [provider]. Give me a step-by-step plan for a small static website or API, the exact guardrails to set first, what to put in the README, and how to delete everything at the end.
