Branching scenarios for training

A branching scenario is a short story where each choice leads to a different next scene, and AI makes these quick to draft for staff or student training.

Reading a rule is easy to forget. Making a choice and seeing what happens next sticks. That is the idea behind branching scenarios: a situation, two or three choices, and a result that depends on what you picked.

For example, a new shop assistant meets a customer who wants to return an item without a receipt. Choice A: refuse firmly. Choice B: check the system for the purchase. Choice C: call the manager. Each leads to a short scene and some feedback.

AI can draft the whole tree in minutes. Give it the topic, the learner, the correct policy, and how many decisions deep it should go. Ask for each scene, the choices and feedback that explains why a choice is good or poor.

Then check it against your real rules. AI may invent a policy or make the right answer too obvious. Keep it short, around three decision points, and test it on one or two learners before you roll it out.

Do it now

Draft a three-step scenario

  1. 1. Pick a situation people on your team or in your class often get wrong.
  2. 2. Use the prompt below with your real rule pasted in.
  3. 3. Play it through yourself and fix any step that does not match how things really work.
Write a branching training scenario for [LEARNER] about [SITUATION]. The correct policy is: [PASTE RULE]. Use three decision points with three choices each. For every choice, give the next scene in two sentences and one line of feedback. Number everything so I can follow the paths.

Words from this lesson

Generative AI
AI that produces new text, images, audio, video or code, rather than only sorting or scoring existing things.
Hallucination
When an AI states something false with confidence, such as a made-up fact, quote or source.
Prompt
The instruction or question you give an AI. Clearer prompts with context usually get much better answers.
