When a relative's voice is a copy
A few seconds of your child's or parent's voice from a video is enough for AI to make a convincing copy, so a familiar voice on the phone proves nothing by itself.
01 · The idea
Voice cloning tools learn how a person sounds from a short recording: a TikTok clip, a voice message, a video posted at a wedding. The copy can then say anything the scammer types.
The call usually comes from an unknown number, or a hacked account you recognise. The voice is upset and the line is often bad, which hides small mistakes. Someone else may take the phone and claim to be a doctor, a police officer or a lender.
The goal is always money, fast, through a transfer to an account you have never used. They will ask you to stay on the line so you cannot call anyone.
End the call and ring your relative on the number you already have saved. If you cannot reach them, call another family member who is likely to be with them. A real emergency will still be real ten minutes later.
02 · Think of it like this
A cloned voice is like a mask made from a photo. From a distance it looks right, so you check by talking to the real face.
03 · Do it now
04 · Quick check
