What AGI means

AGI, artificial general intelligence, usually means AI that can learn and do most thinking tasks as well as a capable person.

01 · The idea

Today's AI is often strong in one area and weak in another. A chatbot can write a poem in seconds and then fail a simple puzzle a child would solve.

AGI describes something broader: one system that can pick up almost any mental task, learn new skills quickly, and handle situations it was never trained for, at roughly human level or better.

There is no single agreed definition. Some people define AGI by tests, some by how much useful work it can do, some by whether it can learn on its own. That is why two experts can argue about whether we are close and both have a point.

When you read a headline about AGI, ask: which definition are they using? The answer changes what the claim really means.

02 · Think of it like this

Today's AI is like a set of very good specialist tools. AGI would be closer to a new colleague who can be trained to do almost any desk job.

03 · Do it now

04 · Quick check

Why do experts disagree about whether AGI has arrived or is near?
