Your portfolio project
You can plan, build and present one deep learning project that shows real skill.
Pick a small, real problem
One finished project beats five half-done tutorials. Choose a problem with a clear input, a clear output and data you can actually get. Good examples: classifying defects in product photos, sorting support messages by topic, or fine-tuning a small open language model to write in a specific format.
Avoid repeating MNIST or the Titanic dataset as your headline project. Hiring managers have seen thousands.
Build it like an engineer
Start with a baseline: the simplest model, or even a rule, that gives you a number to beat. Then fine-tune a pretrained model. Keep a fixed test set and report results on it once. Show the confusion matrix and a handful of failure cases, not just accuracy.
Track experiments in a simple table or a free tool such as Weights & Biases. Note what you changed and what happened. That record is often more convincing than the final score.
Ship and explain
Put a small demo online. Hugging Face Spaces hosts Gradio or Streamlit apps for free on CPU, which is enough for a small model. Push your code to GitHub with a clear README: the problem, the data, the approach, the results, the limits and what you would do next.
Be honest about weaknesses, bias in the data and where the model fails. Good teams trust people who know their model's limits.
Try it
Scope your project in 15 minutes
- 1.Write down three problems you care about that involve images, text or sound.
- 2.Paste them into a chatbot with the prompt below.
- 3.Pick the one with available data and a demo you could build in two to three weekends.
I am learning deep learning and need one portfolio project. Here are three ideas: [list]. For each, suggest a free public dataset or how to collect data, a pretrained model to start from, a baseline, an evaluation metric, and a simple demo for Hugging Face Spaces. Then tell me which is most realistic for two to three weekends on a free Colab GPU.
